Gotcha Day: Friday, June 1st, 2018
Gunter came into the OWRAssit system as a surrender in the fall of 2018. He had been through 2 families, an animal shelter and 3 name changes and he wasn't even 3.
He had severe separation anxiety which led him to be insanely destructive. That, combined with his boundless energy, led to his surrender.
For the first month he was fostered, he was leashed to my side all day to learn that he wasn't alone and could relax & feel safe. Crating made his anxiety worse - he could be crated in a room full of people and still go into panic mode.
In those early days we walked at least 10km a day to burn off his nervous energy. Training was a long journey with many destroyed blankets & beds, many nervous pee puddles and lots of nervous snapping.
7 years later, he still panics when I leave his sight but has learned coping skills to deal with his separation anxiety.
He will never be a dog who is content to be on his own - but he's living the dream thanks to OWRAssit and its volunteers.
