Gotcha Day: Sunday, October 1st, 2023
When Violet came into rescue in the fall of 2023, her world had turned upside down. A beautiful grey Weimaraner born on December 10th, she had lived with her family and her mate—raising puppies and bringing joy to the home. But after her humans returned to work post-COVID, Violet developed severe separation anxiety. The once-familiar home became a source of stress. In her panic, she broke her nails and teeth trying to escape her crate, unable to cope with the long hours alone. Despite the love from her original family, it became clear that she needed a different environment to heal.
That’s where I came in—as a foster.
Bringing Violet into my home was both heartwarming and heartbreaking. Her anxiety was real and raw. I immediately took her to the vet, where we got her started on medication to ease her stress. I reached out to other Weimaraner owners, trainers, and rescue supporters for advice. Everyone wanted to see Violet thrive—and slowly, she started to.
I already had an older Weimaraner named Shadow, and from the start, it was clear that Violet found comfort in having another dog by her side. They quickly formed a bond, and Shadow became her steady presence and silent teacher. I began walking Violet every day, making sure her body was just as tired as her mind. Then we practiced short absences—just five minutes at first. It wasn’t easy. In those early days, Violet scratched up the door trim out of distress. But we kept at it, little by little.
Eventually, we could leave her for an hour, then two, then five. With consistency, love, and the companionship of Shadow, Violet began to trust again. She learned that we’d always come back. That she was safe.
Violet has blossomed into a loving, sensitive soul who adores her daily walks, the comfort of her home, and curling up next to Shadow. She’s gentle, loyal, and so in tune with the emotions of those around her. Her eyes carry both wisdom and hope.
It wasn’t long before I knew—I wasn’t just fostering Violet. I was her forever home.
She is what we affectionately call a “foster fail”—but for me, she is an absolute win. Violet has filled our home with joy, softness, and resilience. She is a shining example of how patience, structure, and love can turn a dog’s life around.
We are so lucky to have her.
